We Explored Rosh Hashanah!

Math Explorations

We started our week with a tangram matching activity. Mason and Shaya matched the colors and shapes of the tiles to the pictures on the table. This allowed them to practice persistence, one-to-one correlation, and problem solving skills. They needed to approach the activity with focus so that they could sort the shapes and then find where their matching picture was. They also needed to use problem solving skills when they had the right tile, but it didn't match the picture accurately. When they were able to manipulate the tiles so that they fit into the picture properly they were so proud of themselves!

Yosef and Shaya worked together to push and pull pipe cleaners through a colander. They were able to use both gross and fine motor skills to become successful at this task.

Shofar

Rabbi Tzvi continued to blow the Shofar for us this week. David brought in his own Shofar from home, and they blew them together! David took his work very seriously! This activity wasn't just adorable, it also showed that David could imitate Rabbi Tzvi: an important cognitive skill!

Happy Birthday, Yosef!

We worked very hard for Yosef's birthday party! The children worked together to paint his card and the wrapping paper to his gift! Working on a collaborative project is very challenging for toddlers. They are challenged to become aware of space, to share materials successfully, and to problem solve when actions occur outside their comfort zone such as a child painting in the spot that they hoped to paint in. The children were also challenged to self-regulate while they worked so closely together to keep everyone safe. They were able to grow their relationships with each other through this collaborative task. We all had such a wonderful time with Yosef for his birthday party!

Me, Myself, and Avery

Avery chose to take the mirror off the shelf and bring it to the table so that she could look at herself. This activity shows that she is becoming aware of herself and learning to differentiate herself from others.

Playing in Nature

We also had lots of opportunities this week to play outside! Mason, Morgan, Shaya, and David used their fine motor skills, to explore and discover what happens when they pick up pebbles, and let them drop to the ground. Morgan also chose to fill a container with dirt and pour it onto plants, pretending it was water.

Rosh Hashanah Activities

Shaya threw apples into baskets, practicing his hand-eye coordination and large motor skills. Yosef chose to sort the apples into different baskets. This is a great example how one provocation in the classroom can invite children to explore their own interests in different ways.

Yosef chose to pick up and explore the wooden fish in our classroom. Avery began working on an observational drawing of the fish and an apple. All the children will begin this kind of work as they grow, but it's great to start the process as early as two!

Talya used tongs to place toy apples into a muffin tin. This is both a fine motor and a pre-math skill. She was able to concentrate, use her hand muscles, and drop her apples into each muffin spot.

L'Shana Tova!

We had a wonderful week together with Morah Brey and Morah Sydney learning about Rosh Hashanah and exploring the world around us! Have a very happy Rosh Hashanah!

Happy Birthday to Talia!

We started off our week with preparations for our first in-school birthday party for our friend Talia. We really got into it with decorating a birthday hat and a birthday card. We even baked a cake which we all really enjoyed. The best of all of course was the birthday celebration. We sang and danced and enjoyed everyones company!

Rosh Hashanah:

We continued learning about the holiday through new manipulative trays. One our our favorites this week was making play dough apples for the apple trees.
We made honey jars and loved lacing Rosh Hashanah shapes. It was a little challenging at first, but we are fast learners and quickly got the hang of it.
We also measured how tall we were using apples.

Rosh Hashana!

This week we brought in manipulative activities for the children to practice their fine motor skills as well as hand eye coordination. They loved it to say the least. We've been sorting cutlery, using tongs to pick up apples and carefully putting pipe cleaners through a colander. The children are practicing to put their tray with the activity back on the shelf too.

Rosh Hashanah:
We introduced Rosh Hashana this week. We filled our sensory table with oats and apples.
We explored the inside of an apple and then used it to do apple stamping.
We are also becoming familiar with the Items that we use on Rosh Hashana through a matching activity. A big thanks to Rabbi Tzvi for coming in and blowing the shofar. The children are mesmerized by it. We learnt a song about shofar.

The shofar in the shul goes
Too too too x3
The shofar in the shul goes
Too too too
On rosh hashanah

Another song we learnt about apples and honey:

Apples apples
Honey honey
Is so yummy in my tummy
Apples apples
Honey honey
Yay its rosh hashanah.

Mural in our Classroom

Dear Parents,

It has been such a wonderful week here at CJP teaching your children. If you havent met me yet, I am Morah Malka and I am substituting for Felicia over her maternity leave.

Over this week we have been exploring shapes using geometric boards. We also worked on our matching skills and practiced matching pictures of animals to toy animals.

Last week the children really enjoyed painting the hallway mural, so we decided to bring it into the classroom. We hung up paper and had the children paint using different shaped sponges. Some of the children opted to doing hand stamping like they did in the hallway. We added in more colors and painting tools.

Looking forward to a wonderful week next week.

Art, Clay, and Murals!

Dear Parents,

Thank you all for taking the time last night to join us for curriculum night. I hope the experience presented the opportunity for you to see things through a child's lens as well as a teacher's. I want to say your participation was greatly appreciated.

Alomg with acclimating to our new environments, this week in school as most of you saw all the classes participated in painting the mural in the hallway. I was excited to see the a majority of our friends were very interested in expressing their creativity through paint. Knowing the children were so intrigued with this we will set up a mural project in our classroom and see where it goes.

This week in the classroom we also explored with clay. Some of our friends Yochai, Mason, and Shaya enjoyed working with the clay inside and used materials such as popsicle sticks and animals to manipulate the clay into different shapes. Our other friends like Morgan and Talya chose to work with the clay outside one day this week and used raw materials such as the leaves that had fallen from the trees and little twigs found on the ground to manipulate and construct. Not only do our friends have a way to express themselves creatively they are also refining small muscle movements. Through art activities like clay and wall murals, they are developing their fine motor skills needed for writing along with gross motor skills needed for stability and coordination.

We will continue to further explore mural paintings with our own next week. Also we will be starting dance on Wednesday morning.  Please check out the Facebook group for pictures of our week!
